DFW pool-light troubleshooting

Pool Light Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide

Pool light not working, flickering or tripping the GFCI? Learn the common fixture, transformer, wiring, control and electrical causes before replacing parts.

Start with the symptom.

A pool light system is more than the underwater fixture. Breakers, GFCI protection, transformers, switches, relays, automation and wiring can create the same visible symptom.

Completely dark

Check the power path before assuming the fixture is bad. Protection, switching, transformers and controls can all interrupt power.

GFCI trips

Water intrusion, fixture failure, cord damage or another ground fault can trip the protective device. Do not bypass it.

Flickers or dims

Intermittent output may point to voltage issues, loose connections, a failing LED driver or fixture damage.

Wrong color / out of sync

Color systems can lose synchronization because of fixture, relay, switch, automation or control problems.

What a diagnosis may include

1. Protection and powerBreaker, GFCI and available voltage.
2. Transformer / switchingLow-voltage output, switch, relay or control path.
3. Fixture and cordCondition of the underwater light, cord, seals and compatibility.
4. AutomationProgramming, relay operation and synchronization where applicable.
